Product Packaging Standards

Packaging Creation

File Structuring:

  • All packaging will be designed using the latest version of Adobe Illustrator unless stated otherwise.
  • Elements and images should be in CMYK mode unless specified differently.
  • Document effects raster settings must be set to 300 DPI.
  • Artboards should align with the outermost cut lines and be named descriptively.
  • A minimum 0.125″ bleed must be defined in the document settings unless otherwise requested.
  • Ensure die lines, product placements, foil or special prints, and artwork layers are correctly labeled.
  • Colors and fonts must adhere to brand standards.
  • Logos should display the current trademarks.
  • Compliance information, such as Prop65, must be listed and reviewed by knowledgeable teams.
  • Copyright information should be updated with the current year every time packaging changes occur.
  • Include Pantone swatches, scale, and slug information in an unprintable layer.
  • The packaging file must be proofed for accuracy and at a minimum spell-checked in Illustrator.

Die Lines Requirements:

  • Must be on a separate, locked layer titled “DIE LINES [NO INK]”.
  • Use 100% Cyan (unless contrast is necessary).
  • 1pt stroke: Fold lines should be indicated by a dotted path, while cut lines should be solid.

Saving Packaging Files

In each instance, all completed files must be saved into three separate formats:

Open Master file

  • Remove all unused elements from the document artboard and layers (including blank text layers, items on the artboard, guides, and unused swatches).
  • Ensure all links are embedded or packaged in a folder with the master file.
  • Remove all references to proof artwork.
  • File Naming Convention:
    ITEM# – PRODUCT NAME – DESCRIPTION - PKG.ai

Outlined File

After creation of the master file, the Graphic Artist will create an outlined version of the artwork for production.

The outlined (OL) file will have:

  • All text outlined
  • All links embedded or packaged with outlined file
  • Unnecessary swatches removed
  • Drop shadows and effects rasterized and appearances expanded
  • File name: ITEM#_PKG-OL.ai
  • The outlined (OL) file will be saved in I:\PACKAGING\Brand Name\ITEM #

Reference File

Please create a RGB JPG or a lower-resolution PDF of the outlined file in the same folder. The reference file serves as a visual guide for team members, ensuring everyone is aligned on the design elements and layout, even if they lack access to Illustrator.

The packaging must be moved to the I:/packaging folder before sending.

All .ZIP, .STX, and .RAR files created for electronic transmission must be deleted after being sent to the requester
