Container Unload Process

Process Overview: This process and associated guidelines should be used when receiving goods into our facilities.  Following this process should allow us to receive goods as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Step 1:  Ensure the area is set up properly to accommodate the unload.

  • Ensure the container wheels have been chocked prior to anyone entering the container.
  • Ensure the dock plate is set.
  • Set up the conveyor for goods to be placed on while unloading.
  • Ensure there are enough pallets set up along the conveyor.  Each stack should contain roughly 3 pallets with pallet covers on each.
  • Receiving Lead will provide the Receiving Team with the number of items being unloaded and the TI/HI pallet information to ensure pallets are built to the necessary specifications.

Step 2: Unload the container.

  • Appoint one person into the container to place cartons onto the conveyor with the barcodes facing the team members who will be palletizing the items.
  • If possible, add multiple items at a time to the conveyor.  Again, the bar codes must be facing the team stacking the pallets.  When multiple items are being unloaded, the team member who is unloading the container should let the team know so they can ensure they aren’t mixing items on their pallet builds.
  • When placing the items on the conveyor, place the goods as close to the middle as possible.
  • As we must go deeper into the container to unload goods, the unloader should pull the conveyor to avoid having to walk cartons to the front of the container.  Let the team know when the conveyor is being moved to avoid potential injury.

Step 3: Build the pallets. (Taking place during the unloading process)

  • Using the Ti/Hi Pallet Builds that have been provided, build the pallets with the barcode facing out. 
  • The same stacking pattern should be used for all pallets containing the same item.
  • Continuously check the item numbers during the palletization process to ensure the items are being put on the correct pallet.
  • The pallet building team should start on one side of the conveyor and once completed, move to pallets on the other side of the conveyor to allow the pallets to be moved to the staging area.
  • Once the pallet has been built, it must be wrapped at least 4 times with pallet stretch wrap from the bottom tier to the top tier to ensure stability when moving throughout the warehouse. 

Step 4: Stage the pallets.

  • Once built and wrapped, the finished pallets will be moved from the pallet loading area to the receiving lanes so the counts can be confirmed and the Putaway process can begin.
